avani avittamYajur Upakarma – Avani Avittam which is performed in the month of Sravana, on the full moon day. This year, it  falls on 18th August, 2016

It is very important that all of us perform this ritual without fail and do prayshchita for removal of all the sins and secure the divine blessings.

PDF and Audio Downloads

The complete Upakarma vidhi is available in Tamil and Sanskrit as downloadable pdf files for the help of all devotees. The Audio recording for the same has also been provided for the benefit of devotees. The Mantras have been rendered by Sri V.Sriram Ghanapatigal

NOTE: While the below PDF and Audio Files will be helpful for the devotees to perform Avani Avittam at the comfort of their home by following these, it is for those who are hard pressed for time and are  in remote places where there are not many Vadhyars and also community members to get together and perform this at a common place.  Atleast on this day, it would be better if the members and devotees of our community come together at a place like a Temple, Community Halls, River banks, Veda Patasala etc and perform Avani Avittam, and attain the blessings of the Almighty. This would also serve our community to get together and stronger and save our ancient traditions and culture and do Dharma Karyams.

With respect to KR Suresh’s query:

The First order is the right one as far as I understand. Brahmayajnam is to be performed only after Maadhyaankikam, Veda Parayanam can be done separately after morning Sandhya. Brahmayajnam also contains mantras from each veda like ‘Agnimile…’ to help those not doing veda parayanam separately in the morning. kshamakartavya.

This is a great service; we live in US but even here, with all the temples and help available, there are many places where the Vathiyar is not available; and I have sent this over to several of my relatives and friends. In fact, music artists who are visiting from India who don’t have access to Vathiyar are also using this service. And I have requested them to visit a temple or see a vathiyar when they can, and give them sanmanam. Thank you!

Dear all – I have a genuine question. Can someone please answer?
I got 11 items below.
A) I am I right I would neglect item 6 (as my Dad is still alive) and do items 1 to 10 tomorrow.
B) Item 11 will be done on Friday.

1. Prarthana :

2. Samitadanam :

3. Kamokarshit Japam:

4. Brahma Yagnam:

5. Deva-Rishi Tarpanam:

6. Pitru Tarpanam:

7. Mahasankalpam:

8. Yagnopaveetha Dharanam:

9. Kandarishi Tarpanam:

10. Vedarambham:

11. Gayathri Japa Sankalpam :

    Murali · August 18, 2016 at 5:09 am

As mentioned by the vadyar, everyone should do all items.

    Balasundaram · August 18, 2016 at 6:37 am

    Yes, Absolutely correct!

    Balasundaram · August 18, 2016 at 6:43 am

Please ensure that you start the day with Praatah Sandhyavandam. Also do Madhyahnikam before you perform BrahmaYagnam (#4). After Vedarambham, you may also chant (if you wish and have the time/inclination), Purusha Suktam, Narayana Suktam, Sree Suktam, Navagraha Mantram, Rudram and Chamakam. (http://sanskritdocuments.org/doc_veda/).

    S C Chandrashekhar · August 18, 2016 at 10:16 am

    Dear Anand krishnan,
Item (6) pithru tarpanam is not same as we do for pith- rus by Thil. This is done with wet rice. There is no prohibition to perform this pithru tarpanam, instead, it is compulsory, during Bramha yagnyam, for all those, who perform madhyanhika sandya vandanam. This is done to offer our gratitude to our forefathers from whom we got the right to follow vaidika Dharma. It is not right to say that we don’t have pithrus, since we have our father. Jeevath-pithrus cannot do the thil tarpanam, that’s all.

Ghanapadigal avarkalukku shashtanga namaskarangal. I am, indeed, grateful to my niece Lalli and her husband Ravifor forwarding the link through WA. I am on a visit to the USA and presently in Honolulu with my children and their kids.

Before leaving Coimbatore, I did obtain from our Vadhyar adequate quantity of dharbai, pavithram, koorcham etc,. I have also brought along panchapathiram, chombu, kindi, thambalam etc,. Whilst these would be adequate for Upakama and Gayathri jabam your splendid narration as well rendition of the Maha-sankalpam and Vedarambam would be of tremendous assistance to make the yagnam complete.

I will get in touch with you once we return to India. In the meanwhile, with our respectful pranams to all Vedic scholars.

This effort is seminal in explaining the significance of every step of Avani Avittam It is a must know for all who have been fortunate to have had their upanayanam Internal persuasion is the greatest motivation for adherence in turn ensuring the preservation of a hoary legacy for the benefit of generations to come My humble salutations to the team for their effort I do not know enough to criticize or offer any suggestions bar the need to mention the day and star as Wednesday17th August (Soumyavasaram) Sravanam was the one indicated for upakarma in a local almanac in Seattle as it is folk in these parts likely to be using this virtual prompt I liked the injunction at the end to offeur Gurudakshina Stock auspicious material and perform congregational ceremonies an avenue for face to face interaction in a world threatening to go totally virtual!

Managed to save it on to my computer. However used the pdf as well as audios online today. Completely followed the Sastrigal’s audio, like we do a vaadhyaar. Hats off to him and vedabhavan. Pl. keep it up. Chanted 1008 times the K.A-M.A mantra. Had lunch only at 2.00 pm, London time.

Let vedabhavan, each day send more on Vedas so that our time immemorial great vedic culture is alive perennially all over the world.

P.R.Ramachander · August 18, 2016 at 3:37 pm

You are doing a great job but you are not bringing it to the notice of people who need it.Once you start doing it, I would stop my postings on Avani Avittam

Naducauvery Subramanian Venkataraman · August 18, 2016 at 4:49 pm

Namaskarams to Sriram Ganapadigal. The command and clarity in delivery made me sit patiently and obey the guidance. The explanations are highly motivating and will certainly make the listeners comply with daily anushtanams like santhiyavanthanam and Brahma Yagnam.

Ramesh Krishnan · August 19, 2016 at 12:25 am

Excellent explanation. Got to know many new things
Very useful to all

Shankar · August 19, 2016 at 1:09 am

I found this compilation very timely. I used it today for my Upakarma in the US. Not only was the articulation clear, it also gave enough pause time for people to repeat it. Sincere thanks for this.

A couple of suggestions…
1. Sound recording (as others have mentioned) can be loud.
2. It will be great to if the sankalpa can be provided for the US also..

Again, my sincere thanks and namaskarams.

Vishvesh · August 19, 2016 at 3:29 am

Can an interested non bhraman man follow it and wear the scared thread? Im a non bhramin, but I always inclined towards sanskrit vedic chantings and have desire to learn these rituals. Will anyone a non bhramin student?

Is it possible to post sandhyavandanam like this so that the young generation will be motivated and start doing the same everyday.
If this is done,it will be a great service.

Sri Gurubyo Namaha

Very much useful and informative.

VM DIWAKARAN · August 21, 2016 at 11:56 am

In my earlier mail to you, I had requested for your mp3 audio on Bhodhayana Samithadhanam. Since you didn’t entertain that, somehow I managed it with the help of another Vadhyar. However, will it be possible for you to upload it now as done for Bhodhayana Brahmhayagyam, just a day before Yajur Upakarma?

With respectful regards,

Ravichandran · August 22, 2016 at 5:36 pm

Every word was chanted slowly clearly. I use to wear 3 poonul. The rendering of mantra was 3 times, which I was very satisfied. You have helped all Brahmins on this occasion to wear poonul with satisfaction.

Hari Iyer · August 25, 2016 at 9:27 am

Thank you for your great service to the Brahmin community. It is very much appreciated. I was able to follow each step and complete the Avani Avittam. Namaskarams guruji.

Venkatakrishnan · August 25, 2016 at 5:00 pm

So clear and concise. Great job mama.
Please upload the same for rig vedam also, if you can. will be so helpful.

Sethuram H. R · September 16, 2016 at 3:29 pm

Excellent Rendering of the Yajurveda Upakarama Mantras. The pronunciation of the mantras was very clear with great timing.

My heartfelt congratulations to Vedbhavan in bringing out such excellent work.

Vedbhavan can bring out SANDYAVANDANAM by the SAME shastrigal and it would be a great help for people living outside India with little or No support especially for the children who can learn to do the Sandyavandanam in a proper manner.

Om my God beautiful rendering. Blessed to receive this today on Ammavasai Tithi July 20 2020. Mama be blessed. This is the best rendering I have heard so far.

Sankrish J · July 30, 2020 at 7:50 am

Can update the pdf with swaras

R S Murthy · August 3, 2020 at 12:44 pm

Sri Gurubhyo namah! Very useful. Grateful for this selfless service. One humble suggestion. In the sankalpa, it will be good to pause wherever Samvatsara, Yoga, Karana, Vaara and Nakshatras occur in order to chant the relevant names. Guidance in these respects (indication of specific names) will also be helpful to laymen like me.
