Yajur Upakarma – Avani Avittam which is performed in the month of Sravana, on the full moon day. It is very important that all of us perform this ritual without fail and do prayshchita for removal of all the sins and secure the divine blessings. This would also serve our community to get together and stronger and save our ancient traditions and culture and do Dharma Karyams.

I fully agree with you Mr.Nagarjuna R. I also used to recollect the days when we all assemble at Pillayar padithurai (Sakojipandit street end) on the banks of Kaveri around 9 clock and after Sankalpam take bath and continue the rituals which may go up to 1-2 p.m. By the time we return home it would be 2 p.m. That much was the sincerity, honesty and importance given to rituals of Upakarma. All credit goes to Kunju Sastrigal (think you refer Krishna Murtha to him only) and his son Vembu and gr.son Panju (Panchapakesa Sastrigal). Memorable days and events.

I am 68 years old hailing from Kumbakonam settled at Chennai over last 52yrs. Having followed the above YAJUR UPAKARMA I felt I have gone back to our long time family Sastrigal Sri Krishnamurthy Vadyar Melakkaveri where he used to be very meticulous in those years in rituals when I was a small boy. But unfortunately in Chennai, the Vaidheeham becoming more and more diluted and have become Vanibham….No doubt the Lovekikas in these days are prepared for a compromise if AATHU Vadyars are not serious in following the rituals. They don’t understand the implications of many as the commercial Vadyars not carrying the values in conviction. We are ready to pay any compensation for their time with their soulful involvement. In the rarity of the above the audio presented by you is simply Marvelous…. If you give your bank details which will facilitate our remitting a small token of our Guru Dhakshana…. even though we go in person to get our blessings of Aathu Vadyar with Dakshna.

I have made a ‘very tiny’ donation of Rs.1000/- today as thanksgiving. I hope to make more contributions in the days to come.
I would also suggest, we can add a new and separate audio in form of Q&A what / when / how To do / To not to do, which will clarify the doubts many people would have. To drive home my point:
1. Does vapanam means hair cut only (even if done as a token gesture), or it includes face shaving too? And if the day happens to be other than Monday and Wednesday, is it ok to do Vapanam?
2. Does vapanam have to be done prior to Sandhyavandanam or post Sandhyaa? I found contradictory advice on this.
3. Does only one pavitram be worn throughout the AA performance from start to end, or three pavitrams, one for each phase?
4. Whether Vibhuti or Pundram has to be applied after every bath?
5. If Samit is not available for Samidhadanam for Brahmacharis, will only chanting of mantras do? And whether instead of samits, match sticks or broom sticks could be used as a substitute. Though it is laughable, in the absence of samit and varatti (cow-dung), I used camphor/lamp and match sticks and broomsticks, as I didn’t want to miss out on Samidhadanam? I still could generate the black ashes and apply on my body.
6. Does a towel or angavastram be adorned or tied over the Veshti always, even while during AA?
Though such laughable and silly doubts are there, it would be better if such doubts are clarified by the Sastrials, so that we don’t incur sins by doing things wrongly.
